Australia / New Zealand most charitable nations in the world - Global Study

    9 September 2010

Australia and New Zealand have emerged the leading giving countries in ‘The World Giving Index’ - a ranking of the most charitable nations in the world. Australia and New Zealand are placed equal 1st in the rankings in what is the largest survey ever carried out about charitable behaviour.

"Australians have a long and deserved reputation for giving and it is rewarding to see that against international giving trends," says CAF Australia Chief Executive, Don Willesee.  “It is not surprising to see New Zealand alongside us.

The World Giving Index is based on a Gallup survey carried out in 153 countries, covering 95% of the world’s population and released (9.9.10) by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) an international not-for-profit organisation that manages charitable giving. The survey measures three different types of charitable behaviour – giving money, volunteering time and helping a stranger - and combines the levels of each charitable endeavour to produce a ranking of the most charitable nations in the world.

"The report found that those who are more satisfied with life were more likely to give to charity than those who are wealthy which perhaps follows Australia’s generally high quality of health, stability and lifestyle", says Mr. Willesee. "CAF in Australia is seeing growing personal and company awareness and involvement in planned giving and donors are becoming more demanding in seeing what happens with their donations."

Mr Willesee says that government(s) legislation and support with pre tax giving and promotion over the past decade is helping Australians to realise the benefits that are available to their charity and themselves through regular planned donations and volunteer commitment.

The global results support recent figures published by the Australian Centre for Philanthropy in 2007/08 showing the average amount given in Australia had increased by two and a half times to that of a decade ago.

On average Australian taxpayers give 0.54% of taxable income.
